The short answer

Liga MX's Apertura 2026 ends in a knockout round called the Liguilla, so the club that tops the table is not automatically champion. The top eight of 18 clubs after 17 matchdays go straight to two-legged quarter-finals, with no Play-In. On prediction markets, "finishes in the top eight" and "wins the Apertura" are separate contracts.

How does the Liga MX season work?

A European league crowns one champion after one long table. Liga MX does it twice a season.

  • Apertura (opening tournament): played in the second half of the calendar year. The 2026 edition kicked off on July 16.
  • Clausura (closing tournament): played in the first half of the next year.

Each one has its own regular phase and its own Liguilla, so each crowns its own champion. That is why exchanges list an Apertura champion and a Clausura champion as two different markets.

How does the Apertura 2026 Liguilla work?

  • Who qualifies: the top eight clubs in the general table after 17 matchdays. There are 18 clubs.
  • No Play-In: the Play-In round used from the Apertura 2023 to the Apertura 2025 is gone. The Clausura 2026 was played without it and club owners then ended it for good, so places seven to ten no longer get a second route in.
  • Rounds: quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final, each played over two legs.
  • Pairings: there is no draw. Matchups follow the final table, with higher seeds facing lower seeds, and the four semi-finalists are re-seeded by table position.
  • Level ties: a quarter-final or semi-final that ends level on aggregate goes to the club that finished higher in the table. Only the final goes to extra time and, if needed, penalties.

These rules are in the league's 2026-27 competition rulebook, published by the Mexican Football Federation. Article 26 sends the top eight clubs of the general table after 17 matchdays into the title round, and Articles 30 to 32 set the two-legged quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The rulebook has no Play-In round. The league's own match centre shows the same shape: Jornadas 1 to 17, then two legs each of quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. Read the rules of a qualification contract before you trade it.

What are the key dates for the Apertura 2026?

DateWhat happens
Friday, October 16 to Sunday, October 18, 2026Jornada 12
Tuesday, October 20 and Wednesday, October 21, 2026Jornada 13, a midweek round
Friday, October 23 to Sunday, October 25, 2026Jornada 14
Sunday, November 22, 2026Regular phase ends with Jornada 17
November 25 and 26, 2026Quarter-finals, first legs
November 28 and 29, 2026Quarter-finals, second legs
December 2 and 3, 2026Semi-finals, first legs
December 5 and 6, 2026Semi-finals, second legs
Thursday, December 10 and Sunday, December 13, 2026Final, two legs
Thursday, December 24 and Sunday, December 27, 2026Final, if Toluca reaches it, because Toluca plays the FIFA Intercontinental Cup from December 9

Dates for Jornadas 12 to 14 are taken from the matches the exchanges list. Liguilla dates come from the calendar the league announced in June 2026, as reported by TUDN, Record and Mediotiempo. Match dates can move, so confirm on the league's site.

What does the Liguilla do to a title contract?

It adds knockout variance on top of a season's form.

  • The table leader is a smaller favorite than it looks. It still has to win three two-legged ties, and one bad leg can end its run.
  • Seeding matters. Pairings follow the table, so the last matchdays move title prices even for clubs already sure of a place. The higher-placed club also goes through when a quarter-final or semi-final finishes level on aggregate, so a high seed is worth more than home advantage.
  • Prices reset once the bracket is known. As in any knockout, the path matters. An easier matchup lifts a club's title price.
  • The end date is not fixed. The title can be decided on December 13 or December 27, so check each contract's closing date.

Our outright markets guide explains how season-long title contracts are priced.

Which Liga MX contracts can you trade?

Listings change week to week, so check the app before you plan a trade. This is what we found on October 13, 2026.

ProphetXNot found. ProphetX's help center lists eight soccer competitions and Liga MX is not among them. Check the app for current listings
KalshiLiga MX Apertura Champion and Clausura Champion (one contract per club), Apertura Top 8 Finishers, Apertura Golden Boot, and on each upcoming match a three-way winner, spread, total goals and both teams to score
Polymarket USLiga MX Apertura Champion and Clausura Champion (one contract per club), and a three-way winner market on this weekend's matches

We quote no prices on this page because they change by the minute. Example: a contract priced at 30 cents implies about a 30% chance and pays $1 if it is right. That is an example, not a Liga MX price.

How do Liga MX contracts settle?

  • Champion: Kalshi's contract resolves to Yes if the club is the 2026-27 Liga MX Apertura champion. Polymarket US's settles to Yes if the club wins the 2026 Liga MX Apertura title. Finishing first in the table does not settle either one.
  • Top eight: Kalshi's contract resolves to Yes if the club is a top-eight finisher in the Apertura regular season.
  • Match winner: Kalshi's and Polymarket US's match markets settle on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, with the tie as its own outcome. Extra time and penalties do not count.

That last rule matters in the Liguilla. A market on one leg settles on that leg's 90 minutes, not on who goes through on aggregate. Kalshi has a separate "advance" market type for Liga MX, and none was open when we checked. Read the rules on every contract, and see our match winner contracts guide for how three-way markets work.

How should you approach a Liga MX trade?

  1. Match the contract to the question. "Finishes in the top eight", "wins the Apertura" and "wins this match" are three different contracts.
  2. Watch the schedule. Liga MX clubs also play the Leagues Cup against MLS sides and other international matches, and a crowded calendar moves match prices. Our MLS markets page and the MLS Cup Playoffs guide cover the other half of that rivalry.
  3. Check liquidity. Liga MX markets can be thinner than those of the big European leagues, so look at the bid and ask and use limit orders.

Can you trade Liga MX contracts in your state?

It depends on the state and the platform. Kalshi's sports contracts are blocked by court order in Nevada, Michigan and Washington. In many other states the status is Available β€” dispute pending, because of an open lawsuit or enforcement action, or because of a federal appeals ruling that is under appeal. Three Supreme Court petitions on sports event contracts (Nos. 26-299, 26-338 and 26-344) are pending and none has been granted.

Two things are moving for the platforms on this page. Ohio's regulator sent cease-and-desist notices dated October 2, 2026 to ten companies, including ProphetX and Polymarket, with an October 16 deadline. Connecticut's Department of Consumer Protection ordered ProphetX and eight other companies on September 10, 2026 to stop offering sports event contracts in the state. We found no official statement on which of them have complied. Our US page explains where you can trade, and the sign-up screen is the final word for your state.

Frequently asked questions

How many Liga MX tournaments are there each season?

Two: the Apertura in the second half of the calendar year and the Clausura in the first half of the next. Each has its own regular phase and its own Liguilla, and each crowns its own champion.

What is the Liguilla?

The Liguilla is the knockout round that ends each Liga MX tournament. In the Apertura 2026 it has quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final, each played over two legs, among the top eight clubs of the regular phase.

How many teams qualify for the Liguilla in the Apertura 2026?

Eight of the 18 clubs. The top eight in the general table after 17 matchdays go straight to the quarter-finals. There is no Play-In round in this tournament.

When is the Liga MX Apertura 2026 final?

The two legs are scheduled for Thursday, December 10 and Sunday, December 13, 2026. If Toluca reaches the final, it moves to December 24 and 27 because Toluca plays the FIFA Intercontinental Cup from December 9.

Does finishing first in Liga MX win the title?

No. The regular-phase leader still has to win the Liguilla. On prediction markets a top-eight finish and the Apertura title are separate contracts that settle on different results.
