Soccer prediction markets: the main market types explained

The main soccer prediction markets explained: match winner, over/under, both teams to score and outrights.

Soccer prediction markets let you trade yes/no contracts on match results and season outcomes. Each contract pays $1 if the outcome happens and $0 if it doesn't, so the price works like a probability: a contract at 40 cents means the market sees about a 40% chance. Below are the four market types you'll see most for leagues like the Premier League, La Liga and MLS, with what each one settles on.

  • Match winner (1X2): three outcomes: home win, draw or away win, settled on the result after 90 minutes plus stoppage time (extra time and penalties don't count unless the market says so).
  • Over / under goals: whether the total goals in a match go over or under a line such as 2.5. A 2-1 game settles "over 2.5".
  • Both teams to score: yes if each team scores at least once in the match; own goals count for the team credited with the goal.
  • Outrights: season-long outcomes such as the league winner, top four or relegation. They stay open for months, and you can sell before they settle.

Always read the market's own rules in the app: settlement details can differ between platforms.
